New R2-R9

New R2-R9

I just got my hands on this new version of R2-R9. It came in the Episode I-themed 30th Anniversary Collector's Tin.

It's the same sculpt as the OTC Vintage R2-D2, but it doesn't include the removable gadget panel and accessories.

I'm always happy for more astromechs, and droids from the Naboo Royal Starship are always popular. I think it's interesting that R2-R9 has been made twice, but each time only available as part of a "special set"—that is, not a basic carded figure. (The first version of R9 was available only with the Queen's Starship vehicle.)

Utinni!

I can't wait for this figure. Will it be as good as this one (which is one of my all-time favorites)?

Destruction of the First Death Star—Reenacted with Hands

This has to be one of the weirdest things I have ever seen.

I love the shot where Luke's X-Wing is being targeted by Vader's TIE Fighter.

Mos Eisley Melee

I am not a hardcore gamer. I do love me some Star Wars games, and I try to keep my PC up-to-date enough to run modern games, but I find the initial list prices for most games (~$50) way too much, so I usually wait months or years for the games to come down to around $20. I don't play online, I don't care if my frame rate is above what the human eye can see, and I don't want to buy a water-cooling unit because I need a 900W power supply so I can add the next-generation bleeding-edge video card to my system.

Additionally, I generally go for role-playing games rather than first-person shooters, mostly because my reflexes just aren't that good. But, I must say that I am really into Star Wars: Battlefront II.

It has all the tricks and treats I want out of a Star Wars game:

  • Instant action—Jump in and jump out; No long-term committment like KotOR (even though KotOR is an awesome game)

  • Play either side—Feeling rebellious today? Grab an X-Wing and head to Yavin 4. In the mood to mood to mow down some clones? Assume the identity of a Super Battle Droid and have at it.

  • The whole saga—It has a nice palette of characters, locales, and weapons. You can pick pretty much any theater from the Prequel or Original Trilogies, fighting on the side of the Republic or Separatists, Rebellion or Empire.

But, my absolute favorite part of the game (so far) is something I just stumbled onto: the Mos Eisley "Assault" scenario. It's basically just a big fat rumble in the mostly deserted streets of Mos Eisely. The best part is, you can choose to be a "Heroes" character, or a "Villians" character. I started with the bad guys (haven't tried the good guys yet), and you can choose from:

  • Darth Vader (with armor)

  • Darth Vader (the version that looks like Anakin Skywalker)

  • Darth Maul

  • Count Dooku / Darth Tyrannus

  • The Emperor / Darth Sidious

  • General Grievous

  • Jango Fett

  • Boba Fett

How awesome is that? Each character has strengths and weaknesses... it's pretty cool to bust out some Darth Sidious Force lightning, but Darth Maul can really move. Plus, you're fighting Yoda, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Ki-Adi Mundi, young Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Luke Skywalker, among others.

So, if you've ever wondered who would win in a fight between Darth Maul and Chewbacca, now you have your chance to find out.

He fixes ships, serves drinks, and now plays DVDs

This is just awesome:

R2-D2 MES from Nikko

Check out the official site for this gadget, or visit rebelscum.com for a more detailed explanation (including video).

$2500 is pretty expensive, but I'm pleased to see that we continue to get closer and closer to fully-functional astromech droids right here in our own galaxy.

Red Five, Standing By

I have blogged quite a bit in the past about Star Wars on my regular blog, but I didn't always post everything that I was tempted to. This is the case partially because I am a bad blogger, but also because I didn't want to overwhelm my "what's going on with Roger and his family" blog with "Star Wars this, action figure that, blah blah blah jedicakes."

So, in an effort to remedy both of those situations, I am launching redfive.mooville.com. This will be my blog for all things Star Wars: the movies, the coming TV show (hell yeah), the toys, the video games. Strange but true—thirty years later (30!) there is still a lot of Star Wars news.

Even stranger, perhaps, is that 31-year-old father of two is still actively interested in discussing said news.

May The Force be with you!
